Emotional contagion -- laughing not at but with.
Applied to comedy, it's the theory that we laugh not so much at the joke as with the feeling generated in a room filled with other laughing beings, the brain bones connected to the heart bones. In the video below, the first laugh pops in the brain ("just about enough"); the second -- after the joke's subject and object look at one another -- issues from the heart.
